In an attempt to revive the country’s textile industry, Pakistan President Asif Ali Zardari has formed a revival committee, with Federal Advisor on Textile Dr. Mirza Ikhtiar Baig, former Chairman of All Pakistan Textile Mills Association (APTMA) Mr. Gohar Ejaz and other representatives as its members.

The special committee, tasked with monitoring the revival process of the country’s textile industry, will be headed by the Minister for Textile Industry Makhdoom Shahabuddin, who will also be assigned with the task of preparing recommendations to boost the exports of textile products.

Moreover, the President also suggested that APTMA should prepare a road map for boosting the textile industry in the country.

In Pakistan, the textile industry alone generates nearly 38 percent of the total employment in the manufacturing sector and accounts for around 53 percent of the country’s overall exports.

Industry experts say if the nation’s textile industry concentrates on value addition and is facilitated with ample energy, lower mark-ups and better access to markets, then it can increase its exports to over US$ 100 billion.
