The North-East Indian state of Meghalaya is all set to host its first ever fashion week from October 19-20 in the capital city of Shillong.

Initiated under the leadership of state Chief Minister Mukul Sangma, the event titled Shillong Fashion Week (SFW) would be held at the North Eastern Hills University (NEHU) convention centre, and would showcase creations of the North-East region, with tribal influence.

Nathaniel Weller Rynjah, Creative Director of SFW, said the event aims at promoting Shillong as a fashion hub of the north-east.

Julie Deb, Marketing Director of the two-day fashion gala, said on the first day the event would focus on tribes, which makes it necessary that to be a part of the event the creations should have some sort of tribal influence and technical background.

The idea behind organizing such an event is to provide a thrust to the designers of the region, who till now have been deprived of any such platform, she said.

The first edition of the event has been devoted as the Year of Youth, and all participating designers are young and very innovative, she informed.

In all 16 designers from the region would get an opportunity to showcase their work at the event. By now, six designers from Meghalaya, two from Manipur and one each from Arunachal Pradesh and Mizoram have confirmed their participation in the event.

The SFW Director said being one of the major education hubs of north-east, much youth-power is concentrated in Shillong, and thus they intend to develop it as the next fashion hub.

In addition, the city is considered to be a fashion-conscious one, and there is huge potential for fashion, hence they decided to promote it, Rynjah said.

Renowned designers like Dev r Nil, Nachiket Barve, Anand Bhushan and Guaurav would also showcase their works at the fashion gala.
