Pakistan textile exports slump marginally in July-Aug

According to data released by Pakistan Bureau of Statistics (PBS), Pakistan’s textile exports fell from US $2.197 billion in July-August 2011 to $2.164 billion in July-August 2012, down 1.5 percent.

Likewise, textile exports for August this year, declined from $ 1.081 billion in August 2011 to US$ 1.072 billion, a year-on-year fall of 0.76 percent.

Product-wise, raw cotton exports for July-August 2012 plummeted 83.15 percent from a year earlier, carded cotton by 88.73 percent, knitwear by 14.48 percent, bed-wear by 17.49 percent, made-up articles by 4.82 percent and art silk and synthetic textile exports by 6.92 percent.

The products that posted positive export growth during the period include, cotton yarn whose exports grew by 38.35 percent, cotton cloth by 1.18 percent, yarn by 1.82 percent, tents by 14.89 percent, readymade garments by 4.12 percent, towel exports by 0.54 percent and other textile materials by 55.03, the PBS data showed.

Carpet, rug and mat exports fell 2.32 percent, while sports goods exports surged by 1.31 percent during the first two months of the current fiscal over last year’s corresponding period.

The country’s overall textile imports for the period also reduced by 11.17 percent from previous year’s US$ 421.4 million to US$ 374.3 million. While raw cotton imports surged by 22 percent to US$ 112.77 million, synthetic and artificial silk yarn imports plummeted by 24.24 percent to US$ 84 million.
