China to have cotton surplus in 2012-13

Global cotton production is estimated to touch 24.84 million tons in 2012-13 season, according to the US Department of Agriculture (USDA).
 
The 2012-13 cotton consumption is projected at 23.549 million tons. This will see ending stocks at 16.258 million tons, a rise of 10.13 percent year-on-year.
 
Global cotton stock-consumption ratio in 2012-13 is pegged at 69 percent, which will be a new record.
 
During the year, China’s cotton production is likely to be around 6.75 million tons, showing a decline of 7.46 percent year-on-year. Cotton consumption is expected to be down by 4.88 percent year-on-year to 8.491 million tons. Similarly, Chinese cotton imports are projected to decline substantially by 44.07 percent to 2.83 million tons. 
 
Thus, calculating on the basis of production, consumption and imports, China will have 1.089 million tons of cotton surplus in 2012-13.
