Quton, Zimbabwe’s sole surviving cotton planting seed firm, has installed a new cotton seed processing plant at its Tanzania-based subsidiary, Bernama said quoting Zimbabwe’s news agency New Ziana.

The new plant is likely to deliver an output of 8,000 tons of cotton seed during the 2012-13 cropping season, Quton Managing Director Edworks Mhandu said.

The plant with an annual production capacity of 15,000 tons of seed is expected to cater to the rising demand for cotton in Africa.

The plant’s output is expected to satisfy around 60 percent of Zimbabwe’s overall processed cotton seed requirement for summer season, while the ginners would be required to adjust the rest of their requirement from previous season’s reserve stocks, he said.

The Zimbabwean company supplies around 2,000-3,000 tons of cotton seed to regional markets like Zambia, Malawi and Mozambique, each year.

Qutan’s main role is breeding, processing and marketing cotton seed largely in the South African Development Community (SADC) region.
