Chemicals & textiles decline in week end index

The official Wholesale Price Index for 'All Commodities' (Base: 1993-94 = 100) for the week ended 18th March 2006 declined by 0.1 percent to 197.4 (Provisional) from 197.5 (Provisional) for the previous week.

The annual rate of inflation, calculated on point to point basis, stood at 4.06 percent (Provisional) for the week ended 18/03/2006 (over 19/03/2005) as against 4.28 percent (Provisional) for the previous week and 5.45 percent during the corresponding week of the previous year.

The movement of the index for the various commodity groups is summarized below:-

1. PRIMARY ARTICLES (Weight 22.02percent)
The index for this major group declined by 0.6 percent to 192.0 (Provisional) from 193.1 (Provisional) for the previous week. The groups and items for which the index showed variations during the week are as follows:-

2. FUEL, POWER, LIGHT & LUBRICANTS (Weight 14.23percent)
The index for this major group rose by 0.5 percent to 316.3 (Provisional) from 314.7 (Provisional) for the previous week due to higher prices of bitumen ( 9 percent), furnace oil (5 percent) and naphtha (4percent).

3. MANUFACTURED PRODUCTS (Weight 63.75percent)
The index for this major group remained unchanged at its previous week's level of 172.8 (Provisional). The groups and items for which the index showed variations during the week are as follows:-

The index for 'Textiles' group declined by 0.1 percent to 130.3 (Provisional) from 130.4 (Provisional) for the previous week due to lower prices of hussain cloth.
