All Pakistan Textile Mills Association (APTMA) has appreciated the role of Germany in boosting the strength of Pakistani textile industry in machinery supply and energy conservation.

During a meeting with German Ambassador Mr. Cyril Nunn at APTMA Punjab office, APTMA Chairman Ahsan Bashir lauded the support and guidance extended by economic staff of the European Union (EU) embassies to help Pakistan get ready for the Generalized System of Preferences (GSP) Plus.

Mr. Bashir said Pakistan expects to gain GSP Plus facility from the EU since 2014, which would help the Pakistani textile industry to optimally utilize its potential, which still remains untapped. The sector, he said, accounts for around 55 percent of overall exports of the country.

Noting that the textile sector has good growth potential, but energy crisis is impeding its way, Mr. Bashir said the cooperation from German Government organization – German International Cooperation (GIZ) – has largely helped APTMA members improve their operations through energy conservation.

Meanwhile, APTMA is also gearing up to invest in coal-based 3,000 megawatts (MW) energy project to address the issue and is planning to organize several road shows across the EU and the US to promote Pakistani textiles in those markets, he added.

During the meeting, APTMA Group Leader Gohar Ejaz updated Mr. Nunn regarding the initiatives taken by the Pakistani Government to revive the textile sector, which includes establishment of Sustainable Centre in association with GIZ to ensure continuing improvements in the industry through enhanced Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR), water conservation, etc.

On his part, the German Ambassador agreed to support Pakistan pavilion in future Heimtextil exhibition in Germany.
