The internationally acclaimed exhibition ‘Impressionism, fashion and modernity’ which depicts the 19th century’s fashion scene through larger than life paintings from avant-garde artists of the Impressionism era in France is currently going on in Chicago, which is the exhibit’s last stop.

The show which is currently ongoing at the Art Institute of Chicago (AIC) has been extended till September 29, 2013 due to popular demand.

The exhibition uncovers the fascinating relationship between fashion and art during the mid 1860s through the mid 1880s when Paris became the style capital of the world.

The exhibition features 79 paintings from legendary artists including Manet, Renoir, Monet, Seurat, Degas and Caillebotte, along with nearly 17 exquisitely detailed dresses from the 19th century that provide an insight to the evolution of fashion during the era.

The show examines the rise of department stores, French fashion magazines and photography and demonstrates how each of these nurtured and influenced the Impressionism artists.

The exhibition was earlier held at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York from February to May 2013.

The groundbreaking exhibition, co-organized by the Musee d’Orsay in Paris, the Metropolitan Museum in New York and Art Institute of Chicago, also provides a firsthand look at the evolution of fashion and art during these pivotal years through a vivid display of paintings from celebrated fashion portraitists such as Jean Beraud, Carolus-Duran, Alfred Stevens and James Tissot.

Further enriching the experience of the era is a range of period costumes including men’s suits, robes de promenade (robe gowns), day dresses, and ball gowns, as well as accessories such as hats, parasols and gloves that provide a window to examine the Parisian fashion evolution.
