Qatari designers show Abayas & Jalabiyas in UK

Fashion designers from Qatar and the UK recently held a joint fashion show as a part of commemorations of the ‘Qatar UK 2013 Year of Culture’.

The ‘Fashion Exchange’ show, held at the Victoria and Albert Museum (V&A) in London, featured Abayas and Jalabiyas created by Qatari designers accompanied with headdresses designed by UK’s well known designer Philip Treacy.

The idea behind the showcase was to challenge the perceptions of the Abaya, a black robe that covers from head to toe, and the role of Gulf women in the society.

Emerging female entrepreneurs from Qatar’s Roudha Centre, Elham Al Ansari, Fathiya Al Jaber and Hessa Al Mannai also participated in the event.

The event co-ordinated by the British Council and Qatar Museums Authority (QMA) tried to portray Abaya as a garment of style, modesty and expression, as it is for Kimono in Japanese or for Saree in Indian culture.

‘Qatar UK 2013 Year of Culture’ celebrates the relationship between the two countries with an aim to develop new partnerships in the arts, education, sport and science, while supporting the existing ones as well as developing mutual awareness and appreciation for culture, achievements and heritage of both countries.

In December 2013, the Fashion Exchange would host a series of shows at Salam Gate Mall in Doha, where six emerging designers from Britain would showcase their work.

The event would also host a show with recognized designers like Alice Temperley and Philip Treacy at IM Pei’s spectacular Museum of Islamic Art, featuring Temperley’s iconic gowns and Spring Summer 2014 collection, as well as handbags and hats by Treacy.
