The Ivanovo region in the Russian Federation can be a testing ground for cultivating cotton, according to Denis Manturov, Russia’s Minister of Industry and Trade.

Speaking at the Eighth textile industry forum in Ivanovo, the Minister expressed support for the production of raw materials for natural fabrics.

The Minister cited the example of Astrakhan region, which has started to cultivate cotton. He said the harvest of cotton obtained in Astrakhan region last fall was better in quality than the cotton currently imported from the US, Russian Gazette reported.

He said Ivanovo, Kostroma, and Yaroslavl regions can become further testing grounds for the production of cotton in Russia.

Russia has remained without cotton production after its cotton growing areas were transferred to the Central Asian countries, following the break up of the erstwhile Soviet Union in 1991.

The Ivanovo region is currently spearheading the growth of textile industry in Russia, and a synthetic fibre plant is scheduled to become operational in 2016.
