9th Uzbek fair gains orders for 680,000 tons of cotton

Contracts for the purchase of more than 680,000 tons of Uzbek cotton fiber, as well as for the supply of domestic textile products worth over US$ 1 billion, have been signed during the recently concluded IX International Uzbek Cotton and Textile Fair, in the capital city of Tashkent in Uzbekistan.

During the VIII Cotton and Textile Fair, which was held in 2012, contracts were concluded for the purchase of over 670,000 tons of Uzbek cotton fiber, whereas the contracts for the purchase of export production of Uzbekistan's textile enterprises were concluded at a sum exceeding US$ 600 million.

According to a statement issued by the Government of the Republic of Uzbekistan, the demand for cotton and textiles, made in the country is very high in the world market, and this was reflected during the international conference which was held on the opening day of the two-day fair.

During the international conference many foreign participants of the fair from all around the world expressed great interest in expanding trade, economic and investment cooperation with Uzbekistan, the statement added.

The two-day fair was organized with a view to expand and diversify Uzbekistan’s cotton export destinations and to increase efficiency as well as optimize shipment of Uzbek cotton to the world market.

According to the statement, the country is one of the world's largest producers and exporters of cotton fiber, and the policy of the nation in this area is characterized by maintaining stable volumes of cotton growing while increasing the volume of fiber production and its quality characteristics, breeding high yielding varieties and the use of most advanced agricultural technologies, as well as complete modernization of the country’s ginning industry.

At the fair, the expansion of mechanized cotton harvesting, which has been initiated in the country was the center of attention. The modernized cotton pickers MX-1, 8, whose production is underway in the Open Joint Stock Company ‘Tashkent Tractor Plant’ were also presented during the fair.

Over 1000 representatives of cotton and textile firms from 40 different countries participated in the ninth edition of the fair, which was organized by the Uzbek Government in association with the International Cotton Advisory Committee (ICAC).

Uzbekistan each year produces nearly 3.5 million tons of raw cotton. About 95 percent of the cotton produced by the country is of medium varieties with fibre length of 32-33 mm, while the rest is long fibre cotton of length 36-39 mm.
