Iris Van Herpen bags Golden Eye at Dutch Design Award

Iris Van Herpen, the extremely talented Dutch fashion designer, has bagged the coveted Golden Eye title at the Dutch Design Award, an event organized as part of the prestigious Dutch Design Week 2013.

The 29-year-old won the award, which was the topmost honour at the ceremony, for her Voltage Spring/Summer 2013 collection, which features an array of 3-D printed clothing. The collection was designed in collaboration with MIT architect and designer Neri Oxman, 3D printing company Stratasys, Austrian architect Julia Koerner and Belgian printing company Materialise.

First showcased at the Paris Fashion Week’s January, 2013 calendar, the prized futuristic range included a textured cape and skirt as well as a dress made from laser sintering method. The Voltage collection also showcased garments that gave the impression of being covered with white anemone flowers and outfits made using mirrored triangles.

Other than Herpen, the event, held in the city of Eindhoven, located in the province of North Brabant, Netherlands, also honoured designer Femke Herregraven with the MINI Young Designer Award.

Known for her progressive technologically enhanced designs, Herpen’s latest Spring/Summer 2014 range included a variety of nightclub worthy outfits, installed with sensors which produce sounds when touched.

Based in a shiny palette of black, silver, gray and blue, the laser-cut lace, silk and nylon made line, created jointly with Luc van Weelden, included silicone-embossed patterned leather jackets, minis, floor-length plisse pleated skirts in soft feminine silhouettes and biker jackets.
