A sneak peek into the wardrobe of a fashionable Parisian, who also was the first sales lady to work at the long-forgotten French fashion house Chéruit, Alice Alleaume, is available at an off-site exhibition, organized by the famous fashion museum Musée Galliera, Paris.

Dubbed as ‘The Novel of a Wardrobe: The Parisian Chic from the Belle Époque to the 1930s’, the event offers an insight into the reigning haute couture fashion sensibilities, including the oddities, of the 20th century.

Going on at the Carnavalet Museum, Paris, the exhibit features more than 400 items, such as clothing and accessories, from renowned labels like Chéruit, Worth, Lanvin, Alphonsine, Marcelle Demay, Madeleine Panizon and Le Monnier, belonging to the 1830s to the 1930s.

Curated by the ‘Musée Galliera’ curators Sophie Grossiord and Christian Gros along with the assistant curator of the ‘Carnavalet Museum’ Charlotte Lacour-Veyranne, the exhibits include summer dresses from the Belle Époque era (early 1870s to the beginning of World War I), sumptuously embroidered satin evening gowns from Jazz Age and a Lanvin dress breastplate.

Other than Alice’s lavish dresses, the display also includes outfits worn by Alice’s dressmaker mother Adele (1839-1909) as well as her older sister and Worth’s head saleswoman Hortense Baudron Dumas (1867-1932).

Scheduled to run till March 16, 2014, the exhibition additionally features textile samples, documents, manuscripts, sketches, photographs, lame wigs and embroidered headbands sourced from Alice’s family archives.

Alice Alleaume worked as a saleswoman at Chéruit from 1912 to 1923.
