The New South Wales (NSW) government has secured the Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week (MBFW) Australia for NSW until 2015, NSW Deputy Premier and Minister for Trade and Investment Andrew Stoner has announced.

MBFW Australia 2014, supported by the NSW government through Destination NSW, will take place from 6-10 April and feature new initiatives that make the event more accessible to consumers, Destination NSW said in a press release.

“I am delighted NSW will continue to host Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week Australia for a further two years at Sydney’s Carriageworks,” Mr. Stoner said in the release.

In 2012-13, the fashion and apparel industry employed over 70,000 people and generated retail sales of around Au$ 6.4 billion.

The NSW Fashion Ambassadors initiative, launched at last year’s fashion week, has seen local fashion identities like Lara Bingle and designer Kym Ellery paired with influential international fashion media and bloggers brought to Sydney for Fashion Week by Destination NSW, including Bryan Boy and Susie Bubble, the statement said.

“In 2014, the NSW government will again promote the strength of our state’s fashion industry to an international audience through the NSW Fashion Ambassadors initiative,” Mr. Stoner said.

For the first time, MBFW Australia 2014 will feature ‘Mercedes-Benz Fashion Weekend Edition’ on 12-13 April, offering the general public a taste of the exclusive invitation-only trade event.

It will also feature for the first time ‘Shop the Runway’, a capsule collection created by MBFW Australia designers that can be purchased via a live stream or direct from the runway at Mercedes-Benz Fashion Weekend Edition.

“It is exciting to see new initiatives being pioneered in Sydney that will assist in creating even more opportunities and sales for local designers,” Mr. Stoner said.

“The new Mercedes-Benz Fashion Weekend Edition will generate consumer interest by leveraging the buzz and excitement that is generated from showing at Fashion Week,” he added.

Destination NSW is a NSW government statutory authority with responsibility for devising and implementing strategies to grow the visitor economy, with particular focus on driving tourism and acquiring and developing major sporting and cultural events for Sydney and regional New South Wales (NSW).
