Brazil's Mato Grosso cotton exports to dip 38% in 2014

Cotton exports from the Brazilian state of Mato Grosso is expected to decline by 38 percent in the year 2014, compared to the previous seasons, according to the estimate of National Supply Company (CONAB) of Brazil, released by the Institute of Agricultural Economics of Mato Grosso (IMEA) in its latest weekly newsletter.

According to the estimates of CONAB, the shipments of cotton from the Brazilian state is expected to decline to 270,000 tons , thereby decreasing the revenue from US$ 673 million in 2013, to US$ 468 million in 2014.

As per CONAB, the expected decline in exports is attributed to the fall of demand from China, the largest importer of cotton from Mato Grosso, which in 2013 imported less cotton from the state compared to previous years. Another factor to affect shipments of cotton is the decline in production of cotton in the state.

The IMEA weekly newsletter states that CONAB estimated Mato Grosso would export only 345,000 tons of cotton by the end of 2013, the lowest recorded since 2011.

Last week, IMEA upwardly revised its forecasts for cotton cultivation in the state during 2013-14 harvest period, to increase by 28.7 percent compared to the previous season, with the state expecting to cultivate cotton on 582,000 hectares of land.
