Wisconsin museum to show influential women's styles

An exhibit highlighting the fashions of some of the socially influential and prominent female figures of 19th and 20th century Wisconsin is set to take place at Madison’s Wisconsin Historical Museum.

Due to be held from January 14 to March 29, 2014, the display aims to focus on the high-end couture pieces worn by the ladies to some of the biggest and most remarkable social gatherings of that period.

Curated by Leslie Bellais, the exhibit titled Wisconsin Women of Style will feature items sourced from the Wisconsin Historical Society and Mount Mary University Historic Costume Collection.

One of the major attractions of the event would be a magnificent gown designed by none other than the famous English designer and Father of Haute Couture, Charles Frederick Worth. The dress belonged to the wife of 1880’s Civil War general and Wisconsin governor Lucius Fairchild.

Also a sumptuous gown, which was donned by the Milwaukee socialite Lillian Sivyer, in the year 1937, to the coronation of King George VI in London will form a part of the grand display.

Primarily known for its extremely harsh winters and preference for practical warm clothing, Wisconsin women, during the late 19th century, started showing interest in wearing extraordinarily expensive and fashionable clothes.
