Mato Grosso cotton sowing reaches 34.4% of acreage

Cotton planting has been completed in nearly 34.4 percent of the estimated 582,000 hectares land to be cultivated for cotton in the Brazilian state of Mato Grosso, as per the Institute of Agricultural Economics of Mato Grosso (IMEA).

According to the latest weekly newsletter of IMEA, cotton sowing began in the Brazilian state in December 2013, and by the first week of January 2014, the 1st harvest has been completed with producers planting cotton over 200,000 hectares of land.

As per IMEA, the area planted is during the period in the current season is higher than the area planted during the same period last season, which was 186,000 hectares.

Cotton growers of the state were able to complete sowing despite facing challenges due to the increase in rainfall, and according to the IMEA, the sowing process has been carried out in a timely manner, indicating that the goal of cultivating 582,000 hectares would be achieved.

Last week, the National Supply Company (CONAB) estimated that cotton exports from the Brazilian state is expected to decline by 38 percent to 270,000 tons in 2014, owing to the fall in demand from China, which is the largest importer of cotton from Mato Grosso.
