The Federation of Saint Christopher and Nevis, a federal two-island country in the West Indies, has abandoned production of cotton on Nevis island due to the heavy losses incurred over the years, reports West Indies News Networks quoting Alexis Jeffers, Minister of Agriculture and Marine Resources.

The Minister said that he had done the research and according to his calculations, there have been heavy losses amounting to more than US$ 1.2 million over the last five to six years in the production of cotton.

Mentioning the several challenges faced in the production of cotton, the Minister said it is labour intensive and it is generally not possible to find enough labour force to manage and harvest cotton in the island, as people have moved on to other things.

The Minister also listed pests and insufficient capital for buying pesticides as other problems affecting cotton production in the country.

In place of cotton, the Government would step up growing onions, the report said.
