The Western African country of Togo’s cotton body, the New Cotton Company of Togo (NCST) recently organized a workshop in the city of Atakpamé, with the objective of implementing a strategic plan to increase production of cotton in the country, reports Togolese newspaper Republique Togolaise.

The workshop organized with the support of the Togolese Ministry of Agriculture saw participation from several cotton producers, as well as technical and financial partners of organizations involved in the sector who got together to refine the strategies to increase cotton production in the country.

Held under the theme ‘Let us unite to impact the cotton industry’ the workshop saw all stakeholders involved in the Togolese cotton sector discuss the strategy to revive the cotton production which is experiencing a slowdown, with only 67,000 tons of cotton expected to be harvested during the 2013-14 cotton campaign.

While inaugurating the two-day workshop, Togolese Minister of Agriculuture Ouro-Koura Agadazi, said that by 2022 cotton production in the country could reach 200,000 tons, and the workshop aims to develop a strategy for remobilization of short, medium and long-term plans for cotton producers in order to solve the issues regarding field productivity, training, rainfall, labor, transportation and more.

The workshop saw participation from officials of NCST, the National Federation of Producers of Cotton (FNGPC), and various Organizations of Farmers in Togo (POs).

Cotton production in Togo during the 2012-13 cotton campaign was 80,000 tons. According to NCST, cotton is a strategic crop for Togolese economy as it represents one of the main sources of income in agriculture in the country and accounts for 20-40 percent of exports depending on the level of production revenues.
