Roundtable discusses progress of Chinese textile industry

The reform and development of the Chinese textile industry formed the theme for a Roundtable discussion, sponsored by the China Textile Industry Association.

In his keynote address at the Roundtable Forum, well-known economist Jia Kang said the development of the textile industry in China should incorporate a global perspective and should have comprehensive vision of global development.

Economist Yao Jingyuan hoped that China’s textile and garment exports would grow in 2014, due to an upturn in external situation. He also spoke on how to treat the phenomenon of “Chinese consumers save the world”.

Zhang Yansheng, secretary-general of the Academic Committee of the National Development and Reform Commission (NDRC), said there is an urgent need to solve some of the bottlenecks in the current China’s textile industry, including lack of technology, shortage of talent, lack of standardization, scarcity of capital, lack of order, etc.

He said the future of the Chinese textile industry as well for the entire country is to move towards the rule of law, to fair competition, and towards transparency and social responsibility.

Gao Yong, vice president of China Textile Industry Association, said it would be difficult to see an increase in domestic demand unless there is a rise in level of consumption in rural areas.

Sun Rui Zhe, also from the China Textile Industry Association, urged textile industries to pay attention to cultivate brand loyalty in the consumption process, in addition to include sustainability in the production process.

Sun Rui Zhe outlined four aspects for the future development of China’s textile industry—strengthening innovation, brand building, environmental responsibility, and social cohesion building.

In his concluding remarks, China Textile Industry Association president Wang Tiankai said that in the current stage of China’s economy, which has entered a phase of deepening reform, it is necessary to further explore the prospects for the development of the textile industry, and to do the real work to comprehensively take the development of the textile industry to a new level.
