A delectable taste of native African fashion and design is available at the ongoing Fashioning Africa exhibit at the Museum of African Design (MOAD), located in Johannesburg, the largest city in South Africa.

Slated to run through April 27, 2014, the event offers a pan-African continent tour of more than 12 countries, along with an up and close view of the history and major traits of the ethnic societies residing in them.

The display includes a series of eclectic designs, featured on a 30-metre-long winding catwalk, from nearly 16 designers including Mille Collines (Rwanda), Kreyann (Cameroon), Sophie Zinga (Senegal), Intisaar (Zimbabwe), Project Mental (Angola), Ituen Basi (Nigeria), Maki Oh (Nigeria), Laduma Ngxokolo (South Africa), Daniele Tamaguni (Congo/Italy), Anna Ngann Yonn (Cameroon/ Paris), Mikuti (Kenya/ USA), Namsa Leuba (Guinea/ Switzerland), Kluk CGDT (South Africa), ChiChia (London/Tanzania), David Tlale (South Africa), Jared Hurwitz (South Africa) and Jim Chuchu (Kenya).

With an aim to give an insight into the past, present and future of African fashion in the global platform, the exhibited items include exquisite apparel innovations replete with traditional waxprint, beadwork, les sapeurs and hand knits.

In addition to the garment designs, the exhibition, curated by Aaron Kohn, also includes the participating designers’ stories and photographs.
