Over 3,000 South African textile workers who were on strike since the last four weeks over hiking wages, have ended the strike, following a resolution of the dispute.
Following intervention by the Commission for Conciliation, Mediation & Arbitration (CCMA), members of the Southern African Clothing and Textile Workers’ Union (SACTWU), have accepted the recommended settlement.Over 3,000 South African textile workers who were on strike since the last four weeks over hiking wages, have ended the strike, following a resolution#
Under the settlement, workers have accepted a wage hike of 8.5%, backdated to July 1, 2014, against their demand of 8.75%.
SACTWU had demanded a wage increase of 8.75%, against which employers offered a hike of 7%. Following this, SACTWU conducted a ballot among its members on possibilities of going on a strike.
It will be a two year agreement, with a further 8.5% wage increase effective from 1 July 2015 and a full wage agreement is due to be signed between the parties later this week.
