The Hong Kong-based environmental sustainability promoting NGO Redress has announced the names of the 10 finalists for the upcoming fourth edition of EcoChic Design Award, an international sustainable fashion design competition that brings together Asian and European fashion designers who have a shared goal of promoting an environmentally low-impact fashion industry.

The 10 next generation talents’ list, which is comprised of both design students and emerging designers with less than three years of industry experience, will showcase their six-piece minimal textile-waste reducing collections made using textile wastes sourced from China’s factories, Switzerland´s Army and Singapore´s secondhand stores at the forthcoming January, 2015 installment of Hong Kong HKTDC Fashion Week.

Selected by a panel of judges specializing in sustainable design techniques, zero waste, up cycling and reconstruction, the line-up includes Cher, Carman Chan (Hong Kong), Aya, Xiating Qi (Mainland China), Yvonne, Tien Chun Tsai (Taiwan), Laurensia Salim (Singapore), Veronica, Hsiao Huei Lee (Malaysia), Kévin Germanier (UK), Noëlla Tapasu Koy (France), Amandah Andersson (Sweden), Kirstine Marie Hansen (Denmark) and Victor, Shing Hong Chu (Hong Kong).

Aiming to highlight the positive potential of one of the fastest growing fashion retail markets ‘China,’ the event will be themed as Modern China Chic.

Christina Dean, the founder and CEO of Redress, said in a statement, “This cycle of The EcoChic Design Award specifically highlights and celebrates China’s fashion and textile industry. On the one hand, China is the world’s clothing factory, producing 43.6 billion garments in 20121 and in doing so suffered catastrophic amounts of textile waste in the process. On the other, China is a strong source of creativity and positivity and her consumers have high aspirations for an improved environment.”

Before showcasing their respective creations at the Hong Kong event’s Grand Final fashion show, the finalists will also attend a one week knowledge exchange program, various design challenges and several networking events with top industry professionals.

Started in Hong Kong in 2011, the EcoChic Design Award inspires young fashion talents to create mainstream clothing with minimal textile waste. The competition provides education on creating sustainable clothing via zero-waste, up-cycling and reconstruction methods.

Redress promotes environmental sustainability in the fashion industry by reducing textile waste, pollution, water and energy consumption via educational sustainable fashion competitions, shows, exhibitions, seminars, research and by a recycled textile clothing standard. (PB)
