The textile and garment sector in China’s northwestern cotton-rich region of Xinjiang Uygur is set to get boost as the Chinese Government is preparing preferential policies to make efficient use of resources in the land-locked region.

The Chinese Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (MIIT), along with the National Development and Reform Commission (NDRC), is currently preparing draft guidelines aimed at escalating textile and apparel production and trade, and generate up to 600,000 jobs by 2020, China Daily reported quoting Gao Fu, Deputy Head (consumer goods industries), MIIT.

Xinjiang Uygur autonomous region is known for production of top-quality cotton, but the textile industry in this province suffers from high labour costs and shortage of skilled hands.

Gao said the Government will make available extra funds and also come out with preferential policies to help the textile and clothing sector of Xinjiang.

According to Gao, the Government will also introduce companies with advanced technology to the region, support growth of local companies in the region, and help Xinjiang increase its exports. (RKS)
