Among the thousands of news articles published by fibre2fashion during 2014, the announcement of setting up of new textile mega clusters in the Union Budget, German research institute Hohenstein working on developing an artificial womb for premature babies, Indian actor Shilpa Shetty partnering HomeShop18 for festive saree range, a January 2014 report from a Chinese ministry that China’s textile industry will grow steadily in 2014 and finally Reebok India unveiling its latest running innovation, the Reebok ZQUICK shoes, were the most read by fibre2fashion readers across the globe.

While announcing his maiden budget in July 2014, India’s Finance Minister Arun Jaitley had proposed setting up of new textile mega clusters in India. Jaitely had said the mega-clusters will be set up at Bareilly and Lucknow in Uttar Pradesh, Surat and Kutch in Gujarat, Bhagalpur in Bihar, Mysore in Karnataka, and one in Tamil Nadu, for which he allocated a sum of Rs 200 crore.

According to Hohenstein, about 50,000 babies are born prematurely in Germany every year and it has been known for some time that these premature babies miss the spatial confinement and prenatal sensory stimuli of the womb or uterus.

Now, a textile artificial uterus is under development that is intended to recreate the environment and sensory stimulation of a mother's womb in the incubator. To simulate the same sensations, scientists at the Hohenstein Institute in Bönnigheim are working on a research project (ZIM project KF2136730KJ3) to develop an artificial uterus that will provide sensory stimulation for premature babies.

“The specifications for a medical product of this kind are demanding. Firstly, the material properties of the textile, such as its feel, elasticity and resistance, must simulate conditions in the womb as realistically as possible. The best combination of fibre and fabric structure must be chosen. The artificial uterus will also incorporate a mechanical textile actuator to provide the sensory and motor stimuli and sensation of equilibrium that will promote the development of the infant’s brain,” Hohenstein informs.

In October 2014, fibre2fashion reported that the Indian online and on-air retailer HomeShop18 has joined forces with Bollywood actress and entrepreneur Shilpa Shetty Kundra to launch an exclusive line of designer sarees for the festive season. Dubbed as SSK Line, the chiffon and georgette made collection reflected the elegant personal style statement of the 39-year-old star.

Replete with trendy designs and ethnic weaves, the eclectic range is embellished with sequins, crystal work and zari embroidery. Speaking about the collection, the actor had said, “The SSK collection has been designed keeping in mind an Indian ethos with a modern twist, light fabrics and embellishments enhancing the richness, with the biggest prerequisite being budget friendly.”
