A special event honouring the New York City’s Metropolitan Museum of Art’s forthcoming Spring-2015 exhibit, exploring the influence of Chinese art and culture on Western fashion sensibilities, was recently hosted in Beijing.

According to Vogue, the soiree previewed few of the exquisite fashion creations from the exhibit titled China: Through the Looking Glass, slated to be held at Anna Wintour Costume Center and Asian Art galleries from May 7th to August 16th, 2015.

Some of the major attractions from the event, which was hosted at the ancient Chinese imperial building, Forbidden City, include a 1984 porcelain-inspired blue-and-white Karl Lagerfeld dress for Chanel and a long sleeved high-neck dress, inspired by the Chinese Emperor Puyi’s famous dragon robe, designed by American designer Tom Ford for Yves Saint Laurent in 2004.

The Beijing event was attended by the US Vogue editor in chief Anna Wintour, the Costume Institute curator Andrew Bolton and the well-known Chinese filmmaker and exhibition’s artistic director, Wong Kar Wai.

The upcoming NYC display will aim to explore how China has fuelled the creative imagination of filmmakers, artists and European designers for centuries, resulting in layers of cultural translations, re-translations and mistranslations.

Alongside a display of Chinese films and traditional artworks, the exhibition will feature more than 100 haute couture and avant-garde ready-to-wear pieces by names like Giorgio Armani, Sarah Burton (Alexander McQueen), Roberto Cavalli, Peter Dundas (Emilio Pucci), Tom Ford (Yves Saint Laurent), John Galliano (Dior), Jean Paul Gaultier, and Maria Grazia Chiuri and Pierpaolo Picciolo (Valentino).
