The three-day International Textiles, Weaving Machinery and Accessories Expo held in Erode in Tamil Nadu generated business of over Rs 200 crore, according to media reports.

In a press release, M A Rayappan, chairman of Hi-Tech International Trade Fair Private Ltd. which organized the expo, said more than 90 companies, some of them from the US, Italy and Germany besides domestic companies displayed their products that provided insights into moving up the value chain. A large number of entrepreneurs also visited the expo which proved there was a great opportunity for growth of the textile sector.

Urging the centre and Tamil Nadu government to address the problems of pollution, he said strict laws at present in the state meant that dyeing units were not able to function. Woven fabric has to be transported to Gujarat for dyeing and then brought back.

Industry representatives who adressed the seminars during the three-day expo, said the future of local dyeing and printing industries could be safeguarded by setting up common effluent treatment plants.

The organisers said the next expo would feature machinery of higher technologies, factoring in the desire of the younger generation of entrepreneurs to move up the value chain. (SH)
