EU Commissioner Peter Mandelson presents body's modern social agenda

The European Union Chief Peter Mendelson said today that we build should be modern and forward looking EU, rather than stuck in the past.
Speaking on the topic: A Modern Social Agenda for Europe at the Reuters Newsmakers Event in London, Mendelson delved into a host of issues that mattered EU the most like globalization, competition, joblessness, fair trade among others.
Peter Mendelson spoke on each of the following topics:
On Globalization:
We could go one of three ways: allow global market forces to do to our economies and societies what they will; resist change through protectionism; or build a new economic and social model combining economic dynamism and social inclusion and an active role for government at local, national and European level.
So globalisation can be good – but, and it is a big but - and I choose my words with care because I do not want to be labelled as a late recruit to the anti-globalisation movement – market forces left to themselves, will not ensure globalisation is good for all.
On China & Asia:
I am not going to give you an economics lecture about the rise of China and Asia. Simply let it be said, that we have seen nothing like it since the emergence of the United States as a great industrial power. The big question is how we respond.
On Textile & Clothing Competition:
Yes we now face a huge competitive challenge in labour intensive industries like textiles, clothing and shoes – but in future, in every sector, we will face stronger competition unless we manage to keep a lead in research and innovation.
