PM Phan Van Khai offers full support to Canadian investment

The Vietnamese Government will facilitate investment and trade by Canadian businesses in Viet Nam, Prime Minister Phan Van Khai has said during his current visit to Canada which began on June 25.

The PM told the Viet Nam - Canada Business Forum in Toronto, Canada, on June 30 that despite the geographical distance, Viet Nam and Canada have various similarities and great potential for co-operation.

Located in an important area of the region and the world, Viet Nam, which has a population of 80 million and is implementing its renewal process, will be a good destination of Canadian business people, he said.

PM Khai affirmed that Viet Nam attaches importance to Canada's potential in science and technology and the Vietnamese Government will create favourable conditions for Canadian entrepreneurs to invest and trade in Viet Nam.

At the forum, PM Khai witnessed the signing of trade deals between Vietnamese and Canadian businesses, including contracts to sell to Canada 25 million USD worth of garments, 25 million USD worth of cashew nuts, aquatic products and pepper, and 7 million USD worth of tra and basa catfish.

Earlier, the Dragon Capital had signed a 12-million-USD contract with Tiberon Minerals of Canada to exploit tungsten in the northern province of Thai Nguyen.

At the forum, Minister, Director of the Government Office Doan Manh Giao granted a licence to Tiberon Minerals to operate in Viet Nam.

In the afternoon of the same day, PM Khai met with representatives of Vietnamese communities living in Toronto.

In the evening, the Canadian Minister of Citizenship & Immigration, on behalf of PM Paul Martin, hosted a banquet in honour of the Vietnamese PM and his entourage.
