The announcement of Emirates Airline's new passenger service to Bangalore commencing October 29th is good news for cargo customers eager to increase services through Southern India's largest city and tech hub. The service will provide a substantial 120 additional tonnes of cargo capacity in both directions: an essential improvement needed to meet demand jumps across the gateway.

The new service, operated on both the A330-200 and Boeing 777-200 aircraft, gives Emirates a full eight, non-stop, direct weekly frequencies in addition to its existing weekly freighter flight.

Typical exports from Bangalore including computer equipment and garments will continue to constitute large proportions of freight out of the city. Shipments into Bangalore are expected to include growing quantities of consumer goods as well as personal effects.

"Bangalore is a key destination for Emirates SkyCargo and we have noted increasing demand for capacity over recent years," said Ram Menen, Divisional Senior Vice President, Cargo.

"India has always represented a major manufacturing hub, but with higher expendable incomes across the Subcontinent we also see the emergence of a growing consumer market. The introduction of eight weekly passenger flights will help us to meet capacity demands, which we are now seeing in both directions," added Menen.

The expansion of cargo services to Bangalore coincides with Emirates SkyCargo's recent major fleet expansion announcements. Most recently, the carrier signed a contract for 10 Boeing 747-8Fs worth US$2.8 billion, and announced a commitment to purchase rights for 10 additional 747-8Fs. The contract signing for the 10 Boeing 747-8F's formalises the airline's order, announced at the Farnborough Air Show earlier this year.

Over the next few years, the airline will welcome 127 aircraft to its fleet. The total value of aircraft now on its order books is over US $30 billion.

The Emirates SkyCargo route network covers 85 destinations in 57 countries. In addition to belly-hold space in Emirates' scheduled passenger services, Emirates SkyCargo's fleet of freighters serve 28 markets including four cargo-only destinations.
