Spinning industry in Pakistan going through its tough phase as it depends on import of cotton since domestic production is inadequate and cannot keep pace with increased spinning capacity.

Pakistan has to import cotton at competitive prices from India by train through Wagah border. In this connection, the Prime Minister of Pakistan has recently announced a free import-export policy between India and Pakistan.

The Ministry of Textile Industry, Ministry of Commerce and Ministry of Food, Agriculture and Livestock, are urged to provide proper arrangements for fumigation and quarantine facilities to the textile industry in larger interest of the industry and exports.

But the Ministry of Food, Agriculture and Livestock (MINFAL) has created a non-tariff barrier.

The approach of MINFAL is negative towards this announcement and All Pakistan Textile Mills Association (APTMA) is criticizing this approach.

The APTMA in its meeting with MINFAL has discussed the growing supply and demand gap of cotton available to the industry.
