DHL Exel Supply Chain announced that it will build a new facility in Unna. Starting in the autumn of 2007, the specialist contract logistics division of the Deutsche Post World Net Group will operate a “logistics campus”, designed especially for customers of the consumer goods industry. Construction of the first section will begin in mid-January 2007.
The decision for Unna signifies an expansion of DHL Exel Supply Chain's activities in the eastern Ruhr region, with the company planning to create up to 350 jobs by the end of 2007. The concept of a “logistics campus” is being implemented by DHL for the first time in Germany.
The industry-specific focus of the development features a large warehouse storage capacity as well as state of the art warehouse storage structure, IT solutions and logistics services. The warehousing, transportation and added-value services in Unna will be dedicated to manufacturers of personal and household care products.
This creates synergies and a qualitatively high-value economic solution for all partners. Major advantages result from the bundling of items, including the co-location of value added services such as co-packing services which eliminates of double handing of product and minimises transport costs.
The standardized structure of the facility also means that DHL can react flexibly at any time to dynamic customer demand profiles. The site offers an opportunity to expand the logistics campus in the future to accommodate further customers or larger volumes.
Dr. Stefan Kurrle, regional MD for DHL Exel Supply Chain in Germany, Austria and Switzerland, views the project as trend-setting: “Logistics is a growth market with a huge need for flexible and innovative solutions. In Unna, we are creating a facility where we can offer our customers an ideal overall concept, based on location, size and equipment. We are also planning the construction of additional campuses in Germany and throughout Europe”.
In the coming months, three building sections measuring 60,000 square meters will be completed for DHL on the site in Unna. With a total of 244,000 square meters, the large site also offers room for approximately 140,000 square meters of additional floor space.
