The changes in the EMI in US and Euro currencies over the last 13 weeks are now 162¢ US and 111 Euro cents. The EMI in US currency (701¢) is now 21¢ US above the highest week-ending value in the 2002/03 boom when the exchange rate was 55.5¢ and the EMI was 1167¢ in Australian currency.

In a two day sale, the AWEX EMI increased by 40¢ on Wednesday and by 36¢ on Thursday. The Western Indicator rose by 49¢ on Wednesday and by a further 46¢ on Thursday.

The market was expected to open on a higher level as there were reports of considerable enquiry and business being done during the break. This was achieved with large increases recorded across the board for all micron ranges and wool types. Micron Price Guides for 18.5 to 21 micron wools rose by 100 to 115¢, with better Merino fleece types in excess of that. Skirtings and oddments followed the trend and crossbreds lifted by 25 to 30¢ during the week. There was widespread competition with buyers for China and the topmakers leading the way.

Sales will be held in Sydney, Melbourne and Fremantle next week, when 67,000 bales are currently rostered for sale. Current estimates for the following three weeks range between 40,630 (no Fremantle sale) and 62,100, all up an increase of 7.6% over the same period last year.
