Farmers find sericulture as new source of livelihood

More and more tribals in Vishakhapatnam are opting for cultivation of commercial crops owing to government support and bank aids. One of the profitable activities preferred by them is Sericulture.
There are about 246 sericulture farmers in the district and 227 of them are tribal folks. Tribal areas have farming lands totaling up to 167 acres.
Joint Director of Sericulture C Thimmaraju informed the media that a grant of Rs91,000 is provided against an investment of Rs1 lakh per acre and that feeding of cocoons need special care.
Department of Sericulture is providing proper technical, marketing and financial support to farmers in tribal as well as plain areas and so they are making considerable earnings through Sericulture.
Increasing number of farmers are taking up sericulture. Net monthly profit of Rs5,000 is made by a farmer in plains and of Rs1,500 by one in a tribal area.
