The Rt. Hon. Alistair Darling MP, Secretary of State for Trade and Industry will visit India (Mumbai, Delhi and Bangalore) from 15–17 January. The visit will focus on increasing bilateral trade, the next steps on world trade and taking forward the energy and climate change agenda.

Alistair Darling said:

“India is one of the great opportunities for British business. With the economy growing at 8 percent a year, it is one we cannot afford to miss.

“We have much to offer and much to give.

“That is why I am leading the largest ever business delegation to India, over 150 of our top business people representing over 80 of our best-known companies, to deliver the message in person.

“While we are the 4th largest investor in India and India the 3rd largest in the UK we can and should be doing better than the current 1% trade.

“With the Chancellor I am seeking to re-energise that relationship, make Britain and Indian business look afresh at what they can bring each other. With some of Britain's best alongside me we can make a compelling case.”

Mr Darling will be accompanied by companies from financial services, infrastructure, telecoms, healthcare and others including GSK, KPMG, Barclays, Balfour Beatty and Logica.

His programme will include talks with Shri Kamal Nath, Indian Minister for Commerce and Industry and Shri Murli Deora, Minister for Petroleum and Natural Gas and Shri Sushil Kumar Shinde, Minister of Power. He will lead British involvement in the Joint Economic and Trade Committee (JETCO) talks. With the Chancellor he will attend the CII summit and visit a number of progressive Indian companies.
