He elucidated key trends in the apparel and retail sectors stating that though the retail industry was fragmented, it posted the fastest growth rate during 2001-05. He also noted that there was great opportunity, particularly in value adding a product that could come from fashion designers exhibiting the latest fashion trends. At the same time, he advised industry players to invest in customer service, design and production, flexibility and offering end-to-end solutions.
Atul Ujagar briefed about the Indian supply chain scenario, its drawbacks and highlighted the need to nurture relationships, processes and people with specific emphasis on speed. He said the challenges facing the apparel and textile sector today were in terms of information, happening, waste, profitability, Government support etc. He gave a mantra for the textile and apparel industry to “think big and believe”.
Backed by an audio-visual presentation, Madhu Kapoor informed that out of 12 million industry sector jobs, four million would be exclusively required by the apparel sector. Incidentally, ALT Training College Foundation is setting up its branch in Ahmedabad within the GIDC apparel park at Khokhra that will offer general and customized special corporate courses to provide steady stream of trained manpower for the sector.
Chairperson of the seminar, Sanjay Dalmia pointed out that there was tremendous business opportunity in the home textiles field and he wanted India to match with Pakistan, which held US $10 billion worth global market share.
