AGOA's extension to boost cotton production

Cotton farmers are urged to take advantage of the extension of African Growth and Opportunity Act (AGOA) by producing cotton on large scale, industry lobbyists said.
Last week, African Growth and Opportunity Act (AGOA) fabric provision was extended till 2012.
By increasing production in the country, they can take advantage of better market opportunities provided by US.
Government already has provided financial assistance of KES48 million for purchase of high quality seeds to increase production.
It has also set up Cotton Development Authority to regulate operations of the industry.
In 2006, industry produced 45,000 bales of cotton, a hike from 20,000 bales in previous year.
