CLE animal welfare program is non-existent, says PETA

On the eve of the 22nd-annual India International Leather Fair, PETA released shocking new video footage. The footage shows that despite years of promises by the Council for Leather Exports (CLE) to adopt animal welfare reform projects and take significant steps towards alleviating the widespread suffering of Indian animals during transport and slaughter, the treatment of animals in the leather industry remains cruel and unlawful.

At a news conference held in Chennai, PETA pledged to spend Leather Week informing visiting international retailers and consumers about the animal abuse that goes into every leather wallet and shoe.

In 2002, because of mounting worldwide pressure and PETA's campaign against cruelty to animals in the leather industry, the CLE committed to taking on an animal welfare reform program, starting first in Coimbatore. Since then, the CLE has comforted international retailers that are concerned about the poor treatment of animals in India by claiming it has an adequate animal welfare reform program.

Also in 2002, the CLE assured PETA it would take on 15 additional animal welfare reform projects between December 2002 and December 2003. This never happened, and in 2006, the CLE again made another claim which apparently it had no intention of implementing – this time telling PETA it would take up animal welfare reform projects in Karnataka and Kerala in addition to its work in Coimbatore.
