Khadi to foray into global market

Jan '07
Khadi and Village Industries Commission (KVIC) plans to set up khadi bhavans for sale of khadi attire in foreign countries, including the United States paving the way for khadi to foray into Western countries.

As part of the plan Khadi Bhavan would be initially set up in the U.S. within 12 to 18 months, KVIC Chairperson Kumud Joshi informed press persons here.

Exhibitions of khadi products were being staged earlier in Western countries but sales centre for khadi products were not set up, she observed.

Union Minister for Small Scale Industries Mahavir Prasad remarked that the Centre would take steps to ensure that khadi products would be there in almost all the Western countries in course of time.

Mr. Prasad informed that Mysore and Chamarajanagar would have schemes to promote khadi products whereas Hubli and Dharwad would be encouraged for promotion of village industries products.

KVIC would provide assistance for new designs, technology upgrading, loan assistance and marketing support for development of khadi and village industries products. The project for this would be unveiled in the next month, the Minister said.

For the creation of new designs for khadi attire, KVIC has tied up with National Institute of Fashion Technology.

To avoid use of dyes to colour cotton yarn, University of Agricultural Sciences, Dharwad has decided to promote colour cotton crop varieties, Ms. Joshi said.

She wants people to buy khadi products from certified shops only so inorder to get 100 per cent pure khadi products.
