Knitted/crocheted apparel imports during 2006 surged nearly 40 percent to surpass 13,444 tons. In December 2006 alone the imports recorded year-on-year growth of almost 72 percent.

Statistics show that China accounted for about 59 percent of the total market share, while India, Pakistan, Argentina, Hong Kong, Bangladesh and Taiwan remained major suppliers.

Woven clothing imports showed limited growth of 4.5 percent due to trade restrictions on Chinese products. Yet, the Asian export giant together with Hong Kong grabbed market share of more than 70 percent on the whole.

However, Brazil is facing a serious problem as Knitted/crocheted exports are continuously slowing down, where as imports are rising rapidly.

Last year, exports of this category plunged almost 30 percent to 7,093 tons. Significant fall was registered in total supply, with shipment volume to the US dropping over 38 percent. Nevertheless, the US ranked first among exports markets.

There was a noticeable increase in entire imports from UAE, India and Indonesia. Angola, Argentina, Spain and Uruguay remained overall top suppliers.

Although overall exports to the US declined 44 percent to only 2,109.4 tons, country remained No. 1 market.
