In order to support Kerala's dwindling handloom sector, a campaign was organized which appeals to government servants and students to wear handloom created dresses one day every week. This campaign has become highly successful.
Many State Government officials are making a habit of dressing up in khadi shirts and dhotis made by handlooms on Saturdays. Handloom uniforms for students are being considered by Education Ministry.
Elamaram Kareem, Industry Minister of Kerala, informed the media that of the state's 5.5 million school students, 1.35 million were asked to stitch one pair of handloom uniform each under the campaign.
But difficulty in maintaining and heavy prices make wearing handloom-spun clothes a troublesome task. Income will rise for workers of the sector, who are in miserable situation, as a result of this campaign.
