A New Delhi-based environment and development agency has won laurels at the recent World Economic Forum at Davos, Switzerland, for its pioneering work in India in promoting the use of natural dyes in the textile industries.

The United Nations has praised the agency's project in India as a unique example of the joint initiative of the government, the business and the NGOs.

The United Nations-supported global agency SEED (Supporting Entrepreneurs for Environment and Development) has selected the India-Canada Environment Facility (ICEF), a bilateral development agency, for its project on natural dyes among 10 best development initiatives in the world for their “local environmental work that have demonstrated potential for replicable sustainable benefits across national and regional boundaries.”

ICEF project on “Promotion of Natural Dyes in Textile Industries for Environmental Improvement and Sustainable Livelihood” is the only one selected from India, and one of the two selected in the entire Asia. The ICEF partners in the project are Punjab Durrie Weavers (NGO), Mumbai, Natural Dye Resources (business), Mumbai., The Colours of Nature (NGO), Auroville, Kalamkari Research and Training Centre (artisans), Srikalahasti, Xavier's Institute of Management (Education/Leraning), Bhubaneswar, and the Central Institute for Research in Cotton (Research), Mumbai.

Mr. Achim Steiner, Executive Director of the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP), who announced a list of 10 best initiatives at Davos, said "as we meet in Davos and Nairobi to discuss scaling up sustainable solutions, the SEED Initiative is again offering inspiring examples of local level entrepreneurs in all parts of the world who are setting up new partnerships and using 'global/local' networks to address sustainable development challenges with a business case approach.”
