Khadi Board plans to open 50000 khadi units

Kerala Khadi and Village Industries Board plans to open 50,000 new khadi units to increase khadi silk production in a bid revive the Khadi sector in Kerala state.

To achieve this objective every panchayat will get 10 khadi units each every year for next five years.

Khadi silk market in Kerala was around Rs. 6 crore whereas local production was only five per cent of this requirement.

Presently, khadi textile sales in Kerala were around Rs25 crore whereas production was just Rs 12 crore, hence production needs to be increased in the State, said Vice-Chairman T. Govindan.

To make khadi units self-sufficient in order to cater to the fashion needs of younger generation, Khadi Board would extend all possible help to modernize the sector, informed Govindan.

Khadi silk is presently being produced in units situated in Payyannur, Kozhikode, Palakkad and Thiruvananthapuram.

Special projects will be implemented as part of golden jubilee celebrations of the Board in 2007, Govindan said.
