Sericulture is one of the major sources of income for farmers of Dharmapuri and Krishnagiri districts as its climate is extremely favourable for cultivation of mulberry and cocoon rearing, but due to tension prevailing among auction centres in these districts, sericulture farmers of these districts have been adversely affected.
For the past few days, Dharmapuri Cocoon Auction Centre has been receiving excess cocoons from neighbouring districts like Erode, Gobichettipalyam and Udamalpet resulting into decrease in market prices.
The normal flow of cocoon per day to Dharmapuri auction centre is between 3,000 kg and 5,000 kg but due to tension in Ramapura and Kollekal in Karnataka, farmers have turned to Dharmapuri, pushing up the cocoon flow to 9700 kg, sources said.
The Bi-voltine and Croos breed cocoons were sold at an average of Rs.183.50 per kg on February 2, Rs.184 on February 3, Rs.175 on February 4, Rs.165.50 on February 7 and Rs.158 on February 9, compared to Ramnagar, prices here have decreased drastically.
