Industrial production up 1% in euro area

Seasonally adjusted industrial production1 increased by 1.0% in the euro area (EA12)2 in December 2006 compared to November 2006. Production rose by 0.3% in November3 and remained stable in October. In the EU25 output grew by 0.8% in December, after increasing by 0.3% in November and remaining stable in October.

In December 2006 compared to December 2005, industrial production rose by 4.0% in the euro area and by 3.9% in the EU25.

The average production index for 2006, compared to 2005, increased by 3.8% in the euro area and by 3.6% in the EU25.

These estimates are released by Eurostat, the Statistical Office of the European Communities.

Monthly comparison:
In December 2006 compared to November 2006, production of intermediate goods increased by 2.0% in the euro area and by 1.8% in the EU25. Energy rose by 1.7% and 0.8% respectively. Non-durable consumer goods gained 0.8% in the euro area and 0.9% in the EU25. Capital goods increased by 0.3% and 0.5% respectively. Durable consumer goods grew by 0.3% in both zones.

In December 2006, and among the EU25 Member States for which data are available, industrial production rose in fifteen Member States and fell in four. The highest increases were registered in Ireland (+19.4%), Latvia (+3.5%), Greece (+2.9%) and the Netherlands (+2.4%), while decreases were recorded in Lithuania (-5.3%), Denmark (-2.7%), Germany (-0.6%) and the United Kingdom (-0.1%).

Annual comparison:
InDecember 2006 compared to December 2005, production of intermediate goods increased by 7.1% in the euro area and by 6.3% in the EU25. Capital goods grew by 6.5% and 7.4% respectively. Durable consumer goods gained 5.6% in the euro area and 6.7% in the EU25. Non-durable consumer goods rose by 2.1% in both zones. Production of energy fell by 4.3% in the euro area and 4.5% in the EU25.

In December 2006, and among the EU25 Member States for which data are available, industrial production rose in seventeen Member States and fell in two. The highest increases were registered in Ireland (+15.2%), Poland (+10.1%), Slovakia (+8.9%), Slovenia and Sweden (both +8.4%), while decreases were recorded in Lithuania (-7.9%) and France (-0.1%).
