According to customs statistics, in 2006, storage volume of flax in Zhangjiagang Bonded Area increased sharply. Flax imports amounted to 7,100 tons, worth US $11.77 million, up 138 percent and 198 percent, respectively, over the corresponding period last year.

Hence, flax has emerged as another major textile material into local market operation, after cotton, wool and PTA. These flax imports were mainly from Belgium, France, Ukraine and other countries.

With the rapid development of textile industry and the continuing improvement of domestic consumption level, domestic demand for flax has increased annually; supply and demand conflict has become conspicuous.

Although domestic price has continued to drop, imports still have obvious advantages in cheap price and high quality.

According to industrial sources, flax storage volume in Zhangjiagang Bonded Area increased significantly in 2006, mainly promoted by the rise of regional textile materials market.

Currently, foreign merchants store about 1,000 tons of imported flax per month in Zhangjiagang warehouses. The storage is expected to reach 15,000 tons this year.
