Italian Co's to set up shop in footwear park

An Italian tanning and processing machinery major, Italprogetti Engineering plans to bring five to six Italian small and medium enterprises (SMEs) to set up manufacturing units at footwear component park in Irrungattukottai near Sriperumbudur in Tamil Nadu.

The Italprogetti units are likely to investment about Rs40-50 crore in their manufacturing facilities for the proposed footwear component park.

Italprogetti will play the lead role in the consortium of Italian SMEs, which includes leather machinery and component manufacturers for putting up their manufacturing units, said M Rafeeque Ahmed, Chairman, Tamil Nadu State Council, FICCI, and Chairman, Farida Group.

Approval from two Italian SMEs has already come in for being part of the consortium, with others to follow soon in the coming weeks, he added.

Council for Leather Exports (CLE), has agreed to provide land for footwear component park.

The proposed units are expected to offer job opportunities to about 5,000 workers directly, they will also create indirect employment opportunities, Ahmed said.

A Brazilian firm will set up units in the 50-acre footwear component park to manufacture thermoplastic rubber shoes along with number of other shoe component manufacturers.

Indian manufacturers, sourcing components from Italian firms, will benefit in terms of reduction in time and costs of operation due to Italian firms setting up shop in the component park.
