Government is mulling over importing cotton lint from India through Wagah border after formal request by All Pakistan Textile Mills Association (APTMA).

According to sources, Government has received a written request from APTMA to import 2 million bales from India through Wagha border.

After receiving this request, Government is planning to conduct a meeting of all stakeholders from the sector.

As per the import policy, cotton lint can simply be exported from Karachi port as fumigation and quarantine facilities are available there only.

APTMA plans to import 2 million bales from India as they are of superior quality and cheaper in price.

Experts believe that in order to import lint from Wagha border, Government has to amend its rules regarding quarantine and other procedures.

This season local production is anticipated at 13 million bales compared to requirement of 15 million bales.

The shortage of lint aroused due to increase in the capacity of units in last year.
