Shri A C Jose, Chairman, Coir Board has been elected as Chairperson of Inter Governmental Group of Hard Fibres, FAO which functions under United Nations Organisation, at its joint meeting held at Rome on 1 st February 2007.
Shri Jose represented Indian Coir sector at the Joint meeting of the IGG on Hard Fibres and has the unique honour of being the first Indian to hold this coveted Post. United Nations General Assembly has declared 2009 as the International Year for Natural Fibres.
In view of the stupendous export growth of the hard fibres presently, Shri Jose's elevation to the Chairman's post of the IGG on Hard Fibres is timely and will spur India's hard fibre export growth which include Coir, Jute, sisal, abacca , to its pinnacle.
IGG on Hard Fibres has tragetted to spend US $ 2.5 billion for the growth of world coir sector which has tremendous growth potential.
Apart from India Coir producing countries like Sri Lanka, Thailand, Vietnam, stand to gain immensely by this allocation by implementing programmes which aim to spur its value added growth. This programme would contribute too not only economic growth but would provide large-scale empowerment of workmen.
The eco friendliness, bio degradability of the hard fibre and its Product Promotion would protect the environment.
Shri A C Jose who was in Rome to attend the above meet also had audience with Pope Benedict XVI.
Coir Board is a statutory body established by the Government of India under a legislation enacted by the Parliament namely Coir Industry Act 1953 (45 of 1953) for the promotion and development of Coir Industry in India as a whole.
