Electing to buy new mattress this President's Day?

According to industry experts, President's Day weekend is one of the more popular times for consumers to purchase a new mattress. However, for too many people, buying a new bed is not a task they take on with zeal and delight. According to a recent survey(1) conducted by Select Comfort, creator of the Sleep Number bed, 70 percent of adults say the mattress selection process definitely could be improved. And more than 20 percent actually characterize the experience as "painful."

Additional survey results reveal:
People are waiting too long to buy a new mattress. Only 11 percent of people replace their mattress at the first sign of discomfort. The large majority of people -- 86 percent -- wait until their mattress becomes uncomfortable before they replace it.

Many people don't characterize their last mattress-buying experience as positive. Only 26 percent of people surveyed describe the mattress- buying process as positive. An additional 20 percent could not rate their last mattress-buying experience because it was "so long ago."

Some people view the mattress-buying experience as painful. Consumers ranked buying a bed slightly less painful than buying a new car and slightly more painful than visiting the in-laws.

"Buying a mattress can be intimidating, confusing and 'painful' for several reasons including the sheer number of models and the nature of the in-store experience," explained Pete Bils, senior director of sleep innovation forSelect Comfort. "At Select Comfort stores, we focus on creating the ideal sleep environment for each customer, helping shoppers gain an understanding of the science behind getting a good night's sleep while also demystifying the mattress-shopping process."
